What is the value of pedagogy without engagement?

Schools, more than ever, are buying EdTech to support their students. But the age-old problems persist - are exacerbated, even - in the year of Coronavirus. All too often, schools buy EdTech for the wrong reasons.

Schools’ use of EdTech so often falls down on the grounds that, while it’s pedagogically sound and could deliver results, it is unwieldy, inaccessible, or undesirable. Engagement and implementation are poor and it ends up in the digital equivalent of ‘the cupboard of shame’.

The alternative is equally pernicious - tools that students love, but have very little impact on their eventual attainment, either because they’re pedagogically too facile (hence their appeal to students), or because the time students spend with the content is too passive and they ‘tune out’ instead of learn.

Finding the balance - and measuring

The key thing for any school is to find education technology that lives in that ‘sweet spot’ of powerful pedagogy with impactful engagement drivers. Ensuring that the implementation of such software is helping all students to get the most out of the product is essential. And this requires effective and transparent monitoring data, to drive accountability, to encourage and replicate successful practices and to intervene for the correction of poor usage.

Tassomai worked with a number of schools over the past academic year to learn about how they supported good engagement with the software. From systems used by staff to reward students making the most effort, or to identify students that might require some nudging or sanctions to methods used by SLT to check and challenge staff on their implementation, we researched and investigated, initially seeking to make these processes faster or more efficient. Several of these approaches would take a member of staff several hours each week, so we started with basic systems to automate. After several months of information gathering, and further development of systems, we are now launching what we believe to be the most powerful means of implementation monitoring in the EdTech landscape.

Tassomai’s new data drops for schools

Tassomai data drops, once initialised for your school give you a complete, up to date overview of usage at your school. At a glance, you can see how well classes have been completing their daily goals and instantly find out where more encouragement might be needed. You can customise your view to fit with your own strategies and expectations, and every week, the data will update automatically for you. 

But beyond that, we give you some amazingly useful features - instant leaderboards to report on which individual students have put in the best efforts each week, which classes likewise have done best, and who has passed milestones in terms of course completion. We even have a prize-giving raffle that introduces an element of chance… but of course the more you’ve done the more likely you are to win!

Using these reports will allow everyone at the school to get behind good implementation strategies and communication, and remain consistent through the year… but without the huge amount of work required to gather this information together yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we get access to these sheets?

Requested by the school’s Tassomai Champion or Head of KS/Head of Department. Can be requested to admin@tassomai.com, your school’s respective Customer Success Manager, or Murray Morrison via email.

Can it only be accessed via Google Sheets? 

Yes, at the moment, a Google account will be necessary to access the sheets. If your school systems do not currently support G-Suite, you will need to create a Google account. As long as we can confirm your external Google address from your school email, we can provide access.

Can the reports be biweekly or on a custom timescale?

By default, no. It is only by the week from Monday to Sunday. Any special requests, please reach out to Murray so we can adjust to your needs.

Can this be done for Tutor Groups? 

At the moment, not yet but it is something that we are developing, so please stay tuned!

Can we sort students/class outputs leaderboard be filtered by things other than Daily Goals?

We can customise but we prioritise Daily Goals with Accuracy as our main implementation measure as that is what encourages students to do little & often practice. Consistency and spreading out the work sustainably over time.

Do I get an update every week?

The sheet will automatically update in the background every week on the early hours of Monday morning. Please bookmark the page for future convenience.

Can this be shared with other members of my team?

Yes, we encourage these sheets to be accessed by all staff in the school. Coming soon, any staff with a Tassomai account will be able to access but in the meantime, please get in touch and let us know who you would like to invite and we will share with them.
